Building links by submitting to web directories is a popular techniques used by webmasters and should not be ignored totally.

As long as the web directory you submit to as a “no follow” turned off, your website benefits by receiving a backlink.

If you used your chosen keyword when submitting, you will stand to achieve a higher ranking in the search engines as you build more backlinks.

Most if not all web directories require you the following upon submission: - anchor text, description of your website and keywords. These are essential components in web directory submissions.

Use your targeted keywords as your anchor text and do not make it too long. Make it least 5 versions of anchor text based on 5 targeted keywords and rotate them upon each submission to a new web directory.

The description of your website is more cosmetic and for the human reviewers of the directories itself. However, do not blatantly advertise in your description.

You should then place 5 of your related keywords for the website if there is space for them. Do note that some web directories do not have this option.
